Md. Health Occupations § 1-225 (enacted as § 1-223 by HB 28 / SB 5 of 2021, renumbered; amended by HB 783 / Chapter 478 of 2025) requires every health occupation licensee — including podiatrists — to attest at license renewal to completing an approved implicit bias and structural racism training program. As amended, the attestation applies once, at the first license renewal after April 1, 2026. Podiatrists who completed board-approved implicit bias training for an earlier renewal do not repeat it; structural racism training is the newly added component. No minimum hour count is set by statute. The Board's approved-course list includes 'Introduction to Unconscious Bias and Microaggressions' and 'Implicit Bias Interrupted.'

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Maryland Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

How many CE hours do Maryland podiatrists need?
Fifty (50) CME credits per biennium. Current COMAR requires at least 25 credits directly related to the practice of podiatric medicine, plus an additional required 25 credits that may be completed in person, online, or via other Board-approved sources. CPR certification is worth 3 credit hours and may not lapse while licensed unless waived by the Board.
Are APMA-approved credits accepted in Maryland?
Yes. COMAR allows Board approval for continuing education programs from Council on Education-approved colleges of podiatric medicine, lectures and scheduled courses at national and regional meetings of the American Podiatric Medical Association, and programs given or arranged by the Education Committee of the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association.
Are there mandatory CE topics for DPM renewal in Maryland?
Two recurring obligations and one one-time training: (1) CPR certification must be continuous, valid, and nonlapsing throughout the active license period, and the CPR course must include a hands-on practical component; (2) the 50-credit biennial total must include at least 25 credits directly related to podiatric medicine, with all credit hours pre-approved by the Board; and (3) effective April 1, 2022, every licensee must complete a board-approved Implicit Bias Training course prior to the next license renewal under MD Health Occupations Article § 1-223. CDS-prescribing podiatrists also face an electronic-prescribing mandate and PDMP registration. The federal MATE Act adds a separate one-time 8-hour SUD training for DEA-registered podiatrists.
